Luxury Cosmetics Brand: Revlon

Headquartered in New York, Revlon is an American multinational company that manufactures skincare, cosmetics, fragrances, and personal care products. Revlon was founded in 1932. Today, it stands among the oldest and most well-respected cosmetic companies in history. It promotes the art of beauty by emphasizing boldness and creativity. The company features a diverse and innovative range of products, celebrating a culture where people of all races, ethnicities, and genders deserve equal aesthetic rights.

Revlon currently owns several top-quality beauty brands, such as Juicy Couture, Britney Spears, Mitchum, and Crew. Among these, however, Elizabeth Arden is perhaps the brand’s most important acquisition. Having 15 or so international subsidiaries has allowed Revlon to cover multiple angles of the beauty industry. Its integrity and exceptional customer care have allowed it to expand its business in over 150 countries worldwide.

According to Revlon, its career started with when Elizabeth Arden, founder of Elizabeth Arden and a widely-accepted beauty guru, began her efforts of shifting the world’s opinion of cosmetics from something unsavory and immoral towards a basic right and strength of every woman. This would be in the early 1900s, during which time Arden opened more than 40 beauty salons around the world.

With the increase in productivity in areas like TV shows, plays, and beauty magazines, the demand for skin cosmetics and beauty care grew tremendously. In 1932, with Arden’s footsteps paving the way for young beauty brands, Revlon took its first step as a beauty brand. It started with three young men; the brothers Charles and Joseph Revson and a chemist Charles Lachman.

Initially, it was planned that the company would be called “Revlac,” a merger of Revson and Lachman. However, this didn’t sound catchy enough, so they instead went with “Revlon,” with the “L” dedicated to Charles Lachman.

The company started in the Great Depression, a time when the sales of most beauty products had dropped drastically for even the most well-to-do brands. Revlon, however, was aware of this and opted for nail polishes as its first products. Manicures were one of the only beauty products that hadn’t lost their value at the time.

The supply for the nail polishes was handled by Lachman, with the trio working together to create a new kind of nail polish. Revlon was one of the first companies to design opaque formulas that would cover the whole nail, instead of the traditional transparent ones. The manufacturing process consisted of pigments instead of dyes, which allowed the company to introduce unique shades, giving it another significant marketing advantage.

In just three years, the company had made a profit of almost $70,000. By 1937, the company started targeting pharmacies and department stores. Given its top-quality, long-lasting, and lustrous products, the new approach was a huge success, and Revlon grossed a boasting $2.7 million by 1937.

The year 1940 saw Revlon introducing a new beauty product, lipsticks, in addition to its fully developed manicure line. Its first lipstick was labeled Fire and Ice, with the specialty that it didn’t smear off when kissing someone. With the start of World War II, Revlon started investing in make-up and other products for the US Army, including first-aid kits and dye markers. The company’s attention to detail earned it the Army-Navy Excellence Award in 1944.

Revlon’s Rise and Current Status

By 1946, Revlon was the second greatest cosmetics brand in the US, in terms of quantity. From then on, Revlon’s fame and business career was only to grow. Unlike most brands, who were unwilling to spend on advertisements, Revlon developed its own marketing strategy and, by the 1950s, started to appear on national magazines such as The New Yorker.

In 1955, Revlon received another boost as it sponsored the hit TV show “The $64,000 Question.” It was evident that the project was a huge success, as the sales of the company’s products saw an increase of 500 percent. That year, the company made net sales of more than $51 million.

Over the following decades, Revlon was divided into seven smaller divisions, based on the respective marketing standards. The company also made several acquisitions, the first successful of these being the US Vitamin Pharmaceutical Corporation and more recent ones such as the Mitchum Company and Jean Nate. In 1985 the company became a subsidiary of MacAndrew & Forbes, paid for by the billionaire investor Ronald Perelman.

Many supermodels have linked themselves to Revlon over the years, including Suzy Parker, Lauren Hutton (also the brand’s first ambassador), Iman, and the celebrated Cindy Crawford. By 2016, Revlon made the famous acquisition of Elizabeth Arden for $870 million.

Revlon also manages several charity programs. Revlon has donated over $150 million in the hope to eradicate cancer and reproductive issues in women. One such project is Revlon Run Walk, which aims to raise awareness for breast and ovarian cancer. Its 2018 Employee Volunteer Program through which the US employees can engage in community service for eight hours.
