Make-up Art Cosmetics, or MAC, is a cosmetic manufacturing company headquartered in New York, U. S. It was founded in 1985 in Toronto, Canada, and is a subsidiary of Estée Lauder Companies. It is among the top three global make-up brands, makes over $1 billion annually, and has 500 independent stores. MAC Cosmetics is sold in 120 countries around the world. It was first made to cater to the needs of make-up professionals. Today, it is sold to customers directly worldwide.
Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo founded the company in 1985, withToskanas its creative director and Angelo as the marketing director. Toskan was a make-up artist and photographer, and Angelo was a beauty salon owner. In collaboration, they developed MAC Cosmetics as a line of cosmetics for fashion models and actresses. The cosmetics products were designed to look good an all types of skin and to reflect well on camera.
By the 1990s, the beauty brand was making sales of around 200 million francs and had over a hundred stores globally. In 1994, Frank Angelo started a line, Viva Glam, to raise funds for underprivileged communities suffering from HIV/AIDS. He also signed Ru Paul and K. D. Lang as representatives of MAC cosmetics.
In 1995, Toskan and Angelo sold 51% of MAC’s shares to Estée Lauder Companies. While Estée Lauder Companies gained control of MAC’s marketing strategy and became responsible for managing its business end, Toskan and Angelo retained creative control of the brand.
After Angelo died in 1977, Toskan sold his remaining share in the company to Estée Lauder Companies, and soon afterward, quit his position as the creative director. In 1988, the acquisition was complete, and MAC became a subsidiary of Estée Lauder Companies. In 1999, James Gager was appointed the creative director of MAC, and he overlooked all the concepts and the colors that go into the creation of MAC products for 17 years.
In 2012, MAC launched a collection titled “MAC Selena” in collaboration with Selena Quintanilla Perez’s estate. Her sister, Suzette Quintanilla, worked with MAC to ensure that the collection accurately represented Selena. The collection was an enormous hit, and within a few hours of being launched, it sold out at all MAC stores, as well as at other retailers who carried it. The cosmetics in the collection had purple packaging and included timeless products such as red lipstick and eyeshadows. In 2016, MAC restocked the collection to meet popular demand. Selena’s posthumous collaboration with MAC was MAC’s best-selling celebrity collaborations of all time.
MACCosmetics entered a deal with Ulta Beauty in 2017, which made its products available across a hundred Ulta Beauty stores. This was primarily done for reasons of convenience, so customers could easily get their handson desired MAC cosmetics. In 2018, MAC entered into a partnership with Sephora, which provided Canadians easy access to the MAC products
What Makes MAC. So Special?
- Inclusivity and Diversity
The brand’s greatest sale-point is its inclusivity. Its first ad campaign featured a black drag queen, Ru Paul. Its message was clear: it was a brand that allowed those who had been excluded and made to feel less, to own their individuality and to redefine ‘cool.’ Today, the high-end beauty brand makes cosmetics for all ages, races, and genders and has various lines catering to diverse needs.
- Make-up that is Suitable for Camera
MAC cosmetics are widely popular with movie stars and fashion models. The reason is that MAC designs its products to give excellent coverage and radiance even under the harsh light of photography studios.
- Collaboration with Make-up Professionals
MAC employs the world’s best make-up artists for its platform and has an exclusive membership program for make-up artists. The program offers premium discounts, invites to masterclasses and events to the make-up artists registered with MAC. Over 12,000 make-up artists are working for MAC, many of them managing its stores.
MAC. HIV/AIDS Fund
In 1994, MAC started its Viva Glam campaign to raise money and awareness for HIV/AIDS and signed Ru Paul as its spokesperson. All the sales of its Viva Glam line go to organizations working for poor populations and underprivileged people. Over the years, MAC has collaborated with many celebrities for its Viva Glam campaign and raised over $400 million through the sale of Viva Glam lipsticks and lip-glosses. MACis the biggest non-pharmaceutical corporate giver and a pioneer in HIV/AIDS funding.
