Founded in 1984 and based in New York City, MAC (Make-up Art Cosmetics) is a global cosmetics brand. The company was started in Toronto, Canada, in 1985 and is a part of the Estée Lauder Group. Tracing the Roots of MAC Cosmetics

Frank Toskan and Frank Angelo established MAC Cosmetics in 1985. Angelo was the marketing director, while Toskan was the creative director. Toskan, a makeup artist and photographer, and Angelo, the beauty shop owner, both have backgrounds in the beauty business. They founded the firm intending to develop a range of cosmetics designed exclusively for fashion models and actresses that look excellent on all skin types and photographs properly.

In the 1990s, the cosmetics chain had over a hundred locations worldwide with annual sales of over 200 million Swiss francs. Frank Angelo began his Viva Glam brand in 1994 to benefit impoverished areas afflicted by HIV/AIDS. In addition to K. D. Lang and Ru Paul, he inked them to promote MAC Cosmetics.

Estée Lauder Companies purchased 51% of MAC from Toskan and Angelo in 1995. Although Estée Lauder Companies now handles MAC’s commercial operations, Toskan and Angelo are still responsible for the brand’s creative direction.

Toskan sold his remaining stake in the firm to Estée Lauder Companies after Angelo’s death in 1977 and resigned as creative director shortly after that. In 1988, Estée Lauder Companies had finally completed their acquisition of MAC, making it a wholly-owned subsidiary of the parent company. James Gager has been the creative director of MAC since 1999. During that time, he supervised the development of all ideas and colors used in the company’s cosmetics.

MAC Cosmetics in the 21st Century

MAC collaborated with Selena Quintanilla Perez’s estate to create the “MAC Selena” line in 2012. Suzette Quintanilla, Selena’s sister, collaborated with MAC to ensure the collection correctly portrayed Selena’s style and character. The collaboration was incredibly successful and sold out in MAC stores and other merchants within hours of its release. Purple-themed containers held classics like red lipstick and neutral eyeshadows from the set. As of 2016, MAC had replenished the line due to high demand. The posthumous Selena collection for MAC was the company’s highest-grossing celebrity collaboration.

In 2017, MAC Cosmetics signed a partnership with Ulta Beauty, making its products available in over a hundred locations. This was done mainly for convenience so customers could readily obtain desired MAC cosmetics. In 2018, MAC collaborated with Sephora to give Canadians simple access to MAC items. MAC Cosmetics unveiled its new spring Wild Cherry Collection for Japanese consumers in March 2022.
